Lovely Legumes are nitrogen-fixing plants that improve soil fertility and produce nutritious food at the same time. Crop rotation using legumes improves crop yields, especially corn. Plant corn in the field that grew legumes last year.
Natural nitrogen nodules on legume roots in the Fadaceae family. Bacteria on their roots fixes the nitrogen in the air into root-bound, tiny, natural fertilizer nodules, providing one third of the needed NPK for good plant health. Many farmers plant fava beans and/or red clover as a winter cover crop. Typically, the entire plant is plowed back into the fields or added to compost bins.
