This category includes two very different kinds of pretty poppies:
- California poppies which like the climate of California with dry summers and wet winters. They are usually planted in winter and bloom in very early Spring. Frost tolerant.
- Opium poppies, Papaver somniferum, have beautiful flowers but the flower pods are illegal under Federal law due to their alkaloids. To grow them legally, you must cut off or deadhead the flowers once bloom is done. These are cold weather winter flowers that like to germinate under 60F. They are typically planted in September or March. Snow and frost tolerant.
