1/2 g. Slovakian 'Elka' White Poppy seeds, Papaver somniferum, USDA Organic, Bread-seed
Low alkaloid bread seed strain! An unusual breadseed poppy variety sporting enormous, seed-filled pods up to 2" wide, long bred specifically for culinary use: produces numerous sweet and nutty seeds. True breadseed. The live pods are unvented or vent late, so that the nutritious seeds are not broadcast early like with most opium poppies, adding to the seed harvest.
Originally from the Prievidza District in central Slovakia, where families for centuries have grown this bread-seed poppy more for eating and less for medicinal use. This long-term cultural-culinary breeding gives Elka poppy seeds a sweeter flavor with a more nut-like taste, which lacks the traditional bitterness caused by numerous potent alkaloids. Empty pods can be composted once seeds are recovered.
Plants grow 4 ft. tall with white over light lavender single blossoms, similar to the traditional Tasmanian white flowers, but much whiter.
Poppies like calcium-rich soil, full sun, and don’t transplant well. For best results thin to 3 feet apart. Winter Annual. Cold weather only. Plant in March.
Cut seed pods off the plant as they dry and store upside down in glass, ceramic or steel. Once seeds emerge, the pods can be cut in half to fully empty the remaining seeds for culinary use.
