Perennial. Aquatic version of this genus, likes constant water. Wet feet, pond or river edges only. Easy to grow marsh plant that likes water and sun, but tolerates most all conditions except drought, and looks like ordinary upright grass until it flowers and seeds. Dies down in Winter to re-sprout in Spring. Usually flowers in second year. Grows all over the USA, tolerates heat, floods, shade and full sun. Very versatile plant, and a favorite food of canaries. Looks much like lawn grass or common weeds, but taller. A simple spiked reed with broad seed clusters that distinguish this species. USA Grown. One of the plants considered as an American Ayahuasca Analog.
