(120 days) A landrace lowland variety from northern Japan. Yuki mochi is a pearly white, short-grain, sweet-sticky rice—think Japanese mochi! The cooked grain fries up well and is great for leftovers.
Grows best in well-saturated soil or shallow ponds. Doesn’t require flooding or paddies, but they help. Rice is aquatic and likes the tropics, but can be grown in all USA states except Alaska.
In Zone 5b it can be grown from direct sowing, but it does best from transplants. About 30 seeds per gram. Grown in Maine.
