Walnut trees grow best in rich, deep soil with full sun and long summers, such as the California central valley. Trees for commercial production are usually grafted and sold in pots at tree prices. Mature trees may reach 50 ft. in both height and width, and live for more than 200 years, developing massive trunks more than 8 ft. thick.
Plant whole walnuts a few inches deep in the fall and leave outdoors over the winter. Or, cold stratify the nuts at 34°to 41°F for 90 to 120 days in your refrigerator and plant in the spring. Seeds should be soaked for 24 hours prior to planting in soil.
Walnuts thrive in the USA, China and Iran and are grown in most Mediterranean climates.
