Linked to cheese in appearance only, the heirloom Long Island Cheese Pumpkin has been revered for many centuries thanks to its smooth flesh and stringless interior (not to mention its high nutrient content). This pumpkin was first grown in Central or South America, making its way to the US Northeast via trade in the 1500s. It became very popular, flourishing in east coast gardens throughout the 1700s.
