1 Oz 'Thoroughbred' Barley seeds, Six Row
A common malting barley for spring sowing or sprouting. Plant in spring or summer for a cover crop. For grain production, sow seeds in spring. Six row is the highest in protein.
Thoroughbred barley is a widely adapted variety of barley that is high yielding, with a great straw strength and a high test weight. This grain is a good standing, six-rowed barley. This variety is resistant to powdery mildew and the barley yellow dwarf virus.
Uses: Food, Bees & Beneficial Insects, Erosion Control, Green Manure, Nitrogen Scavenger, No Till, Organic Matter (Biomass), Weed Suppression.
Plant barley like spring wheat; it is tolerant of cool spring temperatures, as the earliest-seeded crops provide the best yields. Barley matures earlier than spring wheat, and is comparable to corn in protein content, but needs less nitrogen than corn.
Barley hulls are similar to those of oats; animals like it better if ground into a mash, though chickens will eat it whole. Tolerates a wide range of soil pH, from 5.0 to 8.0.
