A common malting barley for spring sowing (March) or all-year sprouting. Plant in March to August for a cover crop. For grain production, sow seeds in spring. Rows vary.

Plant barley like spring wheat; it is tolerant of cool spring temperatures, as the earliest-seeded crops provide the best yields. Barley matures earlier than spring wheat, and is comparable to corn in protein content; a good choice for organic growers under conditions that make corn a challenging crop.

Barley hulls are similar to those of oats; animals like it better if ground into a mash, though chickens will eat it whole. Tolerates a wide range of soil pH, from 5.0 to 8.0.
