1/2 g Molokhia Seeds, Corchorus olitorius, Egyptian Spinach
Duration: Annual
When to Sow: Spring
Germination: Easy
60 days. (Egyptian spinach; Jew’s mallow, Food of the Kings)
Vegetable green popular throughout the Middle East, Africa and Asia. Its use dates back to ancient Egypt where it was called the "Food of the Kings."
The plant has anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory properties, and is highly nutritious--even more so than kale. Leaves are minced and cooked with coriander and garlic and served as a puree on rice with chicken, rabbit, lamb or fish. It has a slightly mucilaginous texture that may take some getting used to, but millions of consumers will tell you it is well worth it.
Sow direct in spring or start early indoors and transplant out. Keep plants pinched back for a continuous harvest of young shoots and leaves. R
