Sweetgrass, LIVE PLANTS, 3-in pots, Hierochloe odorata
Perennial. One of my favorite sacred plants! Healthy, happy, vibrant, well-rooted sweet grass plants, originally from Richter's Herbs in Canada, that have been transplanted into larger pots and hardened to outdoor sun. Limited availability, maximum 2 plants per household, as I will likely run out by fall. Plants die down in winter, then come back in spring.
Sweetgrass spreads with runners just like mint does, so one plant will take over five square feet of garden in just a year or two. These plants can be cut off their runners and potted or transplanted, which is why I want my plants to go to different people so everyone can get some going! Easy to grow and will spread rapidly. Full sun. Water daily until well rooted.
Sweetgrass is considered one of the four sacred herbs of the Native Americans and it is still used in traditional ceremonies to promote peace and healing and drive away evil spirits. The sweet vanilla scent is produced by the chemical coumarin, and is thought to evoke a calm relaxation.
In fall at first frost, the leaves are usually harvested and braided.
