AKA; Middle-Eastern Oregano, Ezov, Za'atar, Majorana syriaca.
Evergreen perennial herb native to the Middle East. This is one of the keystone herbs in the popular condiment “Zaatar or Zaatari,” which is used quite frequently by people living in the Middle East. Just mix the dried and powdered oregano with various other ingredients–such as garlic, salt, olive oil, lemon juice–and use it on bread. Quite delicious. The plants are small but spicy.
Plant prefers full sun and sandy, fast-draining soil. Direct sow to one foot apart in spring.
Family: Mint (Lamiaceae). Hardy to Zones 8 to 12. May be grown as an annual in colder areas, 90 days to harvest.50 Seeds/pkt., Certified Organically Grown.
Za'atar Recipe: Combine equal amounts each of dried Syrian oregano, minced fresh thyme and marjoram. Add double the base amount of crushed sumac seeds, and half the base amount of toasted sesame seeds and cumin. Add coarse salt to taste and stir; goes well with olive oil and lemon juice. Now you’ve got your very own homemade za’atar!
