A white roasting and flour corn similar to Virginia White Gourd seed, but with more uniform cobs. Vigorous 10-12 ft. stalks bear 1-2 big, fat ears with unusually long kernels that resemble gourd seeds. Its 2½ in. wide ears average 6-8 in. long, with 22 rows/ear. WHITE corn, easy to shell.
Gourd seed corns are one of America's oldest corns, and were commonly grown in southern Virginia back to 1700. The plants of gourd seed corn are heavily stalked and bear ears having a large number of rows of thin, deep kernels.
Gourdseed corns are one of our oldest corns, and were commonly grown in southern Virginia. The plants of gourdseed corn are heavily stalked and bear ears having a large number of rows of thin, deep kernels. These valuable corns originated from Indian gourdseed corn dating back to at least 1700. They were used for roasting ears, flour and animal feed. At maturity the kernels of some varieties are easily shelled by a light touch to the ear. Gourdseed corns were grown until about 1940, before hybrids became popular. In 1889, gourdseed corn won the Great Corn Contest sponsored by the American Agriculturist, yielding 255 bushels per acre. Because of the push to hybridized corn, gourdseed corns were virtually lost by the 1960s, but resurfaced in Texas.
Gourdseed corns are naturally resistant to some corn diseases, notably, Southern leaf blight.
