Native to the Indian sub-continent, and considered sacred. Distinctly fragrant Tulsi basil that makes a great salad enhancer. The whole leaves are crisp and clove flavored, very cooling in a summer salad. The immature bite-sized buds and their matched pair of leaves are a beautiful topping for salads or desserts. Much better adapted to cool weather than other basil varieties. Makes a terrific herbal tea.
Tulsi is cultivated for religious and medicinal purposes, and for its essential oil. It is widely known across the Indian subcontinent as a medicinal plant and a herbal tea, commonly used in Ayurveda, and has an important role within the Vaishnava tradition of Hinduism, in which devotees perform worship involving holy basil plants or leaves.
