C. berlandieri, also known by the common names pit-seed goosefoot, huauzontle, and lamb's quarters, is an annual herbaceous plant in the goosefoot family. This species was one of several plants grown by Native Americans in prehistoric North America.
The young seedlings begin bright red, then look like lambs quarter with reddish undersides and a crisp leaf. Gives any salad mix a wild look and taste. Leaves and seed heads become bright red with maturity. The seeds can be eaten like quinoa.
The species is widespread in North America, where it is native to Alaska and northern Canada south to Michoacán, Mexico, and including every U.S. state except Hawaii. The fast-growing, upright plant can reach heights of ten feet!
