Lavandula stoechas pedunculata

French Long Lavender

Uses: Culinary/Medicinal/Aromatic

Duration: Perennial (hardy in zones 8-9)

When to Sow: Anytime

Ease of Germination: Moderate. Similar to the standard form, but has large magenta flower bracts and elongated 8-12 inch flower stalks. Height up to 75cm/30”. Stronger scent; bushier habit.

Highly prized for its amazing fragrance and medicinal properties. Known for its relaxing and soothing qualities. Used for centuries to keep moths out of linens and creates a divine smell on bed sheets. Also has culinary applications.

Lavender likes full sun and a well draining, slightly alkaline soil. Lavender is hardy to Zone 5. It will not tolerate poor drainage, full shade or high humidity. Space plants at least 3'-4' apart when planting out.

Use well-draining potting mix when planting and do not bury seeds, but merely press the seed on the surface. Keep moist but not soggy. Seeds can take 4-6 weeks to germinate, but may germinate faster if scarified by sandpaper. Seedlings that are blue-green are healthy and happy. Seedlings that are yellowish may be getting too much water, the soil may not be draining fast enough and/or the soil may be too cool.

Mature lavender is usually drought tolerant. A favorite of many bees.
