1/2 g. Slovakian 'Ziar' Poppy seeds, Papaver somniferum, USDA Organic
A Slovakian variety once a mainstay of the local cuisine in Eastern Europe. A true bread seed poppy with pretty deep pink flowers. Ziar was bred over the centuries to eliminate the vents in its extra large seed head so the blue seeds stay inside the heads to be collected later instead of spilling out like usual. Ornamental single pink to red petals with centers ranging from pale red through darker shades. Although the first batch of seeds had some difficulty adapting to the cold climates of Canada, Ziar has been grown for more than 20 years now in North America for better cold survival.
Poppies like calcium-rich soil, full sun, and don’t transplant well. For best results thin to 3 feet apart. Some folks tie a group of plants together for support against wind breakage. Isolate from other poppies by at least 250' if you wish to save seed. Annual
